Research Methods Explained: A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Approach

Every research project begins with curiosity, but curiosity alone does not produce knowledge. At some point, every researcher must confront a more practical question: How can this question be answered convincingly? The answer lies in the careful selection of a research method. While a compelling research problem may capture attention, it is the method that determines whether the resulting evidence is credible, rigorous, and capable of supporting meaningful conclusions (Bryman, 2012; Creswell & Creswell, 2018).
Despite their centrality to research, methods remain one of the most misunderstood aspects of the research process. Students frequently use the terms method and methodology interchangeably, often assuming they describe the same concept. The distinction may appear semantic, but in research, precision of language reflects precision of thought. Confusing the two can lead to methodological inconsistencies that weaken the coherence of an entire study (Crotty, 1998; Punch, 2014).
This guide unpacks what research methods are, how they differ from methodology, the major categories of research methods, and the principles that should guide their selection. Whether you are writing your first dissertation or refining a doctoral research proposal, understanding these foundations will help ensure that your research design is driven by logic rather than convention.
What Is a Research Method?
A research method is a specific technique, procedure, or instrument used to collect, analyse, and interpret data in a systematic investigation (Bryman, 2012; Creswell & Creswell, 2018). Put differently, it is the practical mechanism through which evidence is generated. Administering a questionnaire, conducting semi-structured interviews, observing behaviour in natural settings, or running a controlled experiment are all examples of research methods. They constitute the operational component of research, translating abstract questions into observable evidence.
Research methods are sometimes mistaken for research methodology, yet the two perform fundamentally different roles within a study. Methodology refers to the broader philosophical and theoretical rationale that justifies the selection and application of particular methods. It explains why a given approach is appropriate for addressing a specific research question. A method, by contrast, explains how data will be generated and analysed within that methodological framework (Crotty, 1998; Punch, 2014; Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2019).
A useful way to distinguish the two is to think of methodology as the strategic architecture of a study and methods as the practical instruments that bring that strategy to life. One provides the intellectual justification for the research design; the other provides the procedures through which evidence is collected. Understanding this relationship is essential because rigorous research depends on coherence between philosophical assumptions, methodological choices, and empirical procedures. When these elements align, the resulting study is both logically consistent and methodologically defensible (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018).
3 Broad Categories of Research Methods
Although research methods vary considerably in their application, they are generally grouped into three broad traditions: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods (Creswell & Creswell, 2018; Neuman, 2014). Each tradition is shaped by distinct assumptions about the nature of knowledge, the kinds of questions worth asking, and the forms of evidence required to answer them.
Consequently, the question is seldom Which method is the best? Rather, experienced researchers ask a more useful question: Which method is most capable of answering the research question? The appropriateness of a method is therefore determined not by its popularity or perceived sophistication but by its alignment with the objectives of the study.
Quantitative Methods: Measuring Patterns and Testing Relationships
Quantitative research is concerned with numerical measurement, statistical analysis, and the testing of theoretical propositions. It is commonly associated with deductive reasoning, whereby researchers begin with an existing theory, formulate hypotheses, and examine whether empirical evidence supports those expectations (Babbie, 2016; Bryman, 2012).
Common quantitative methods include structured questionnaires, laboratory experiments, field experiments, and standardised observational schedules (Neuman, 2014). These approaches are designed to produce measurable data that can be analysed statistically, making them particularly valuable when researchers seek to estimate prevalence, compare groups, identify relationships between variables, or establish causal effects (Shadish, Cook, & Campbell, 2002).
Experimental research occupies a particularly important position within this tradition. By manipulating independent variables while controlling for potential confounding factors, experiments allow researchers to make stronger claims about causality than most other research designs. Whether implemented as true experiments with random assignment or as quasi-experiments where complete randomisation is impractical, these methods remain indispensable when establishing cause-and-effect relationships is the primary objective (Bryman, 2012; Neuman, 2014).
The strengths of quantitative methods are therefore difficult to dispute. They provide precision, facilitate comparison, and enable researchers to test hypotheses with considerable confidence. Yet, for all their analytical power, numbers have limits. Statistical patterns can indicate what is happening, but they often reveal far less about why those patterns exist or how individuals experience the phenomena under investigation. Explaining meaning, context, and lived experience requires a different methodological lens, one offered by qualitative research.
Qualitative Methods: Understanding Meaning Beyond the Numbers
If quantitative research seeks to measure the world, qualitative research seeks to understand it. Rather than focusing on numerical patterns or statistical relationships, qualitative methods explore how individuals interpret their experiences, construct meaning, and navigate the social realities in which they live (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018; Flick, 2018). The emphasis shifts from measurement to interpretation, recognising that many aspects of human behaviour cannot be reduced to numbers without losing the context that gives them significance.
Qualitative research is commonly associated with inductive reasoning, whereby theories emerge from the data rather than being tested against pre-existing hypotheses (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This does not imply that qualitative researchers enter the field without direction or theoretical awareness. Rather, they remain open to discovering patterns, themes, and insights that may not have been anticipated at the outset of the study.
Among the most widely used qualitative methods are in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, ethnography, and case study research (Patton, 2015; Yin, 2018). Although these methods differ in their procedures, they share a common objective: to generate rich, contextualised accounts of social phenomena.
Take semi-structured interviews as an example. Unlike structured surveys that require respondents to choose from predetermined answers, semi-structured interviews encourage participants to explain their experiences in their own words. The researcher works from an interview guide but retains the flexibility to probe interesting responses, clarify ambiguities, and explore emerging issues. This balance between structure and flexibility enables the collection of nuanced data that standardised instruments rarely capture (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009).
Participant observation adopts a different approach. Rather than asking people to describe their behaviour, the researcher observes it as it unfolds within its natural setting. This method is particularly valuable when the objective is to understand routines, interactions, or organisational cultures that participants themselves may struggle to articulate.
Ethnography extends this principle even further. It involves prolonged immersion within a community or social setting, allowing the researcher to understand not only what people do, but also the shared beliefs, cultural norms, and unspoken assumptions that shape their behaviour (Hammersley & Atkinson, 2019). Such depth cannot be achieved through brief encounters or one-off interviews; it demands sustained engagement with participants and their environment.
Case study research occupies a distinctive position within qualitative inquiry. Yin (2018) defines a case study as an empirical investigation of a contemporary phenomenon within its real-world context, particularly where the boundaries between the phenomenon and its context are not clearly evident. Rather than relying on a single source of evidence, case studies typically integrate interviews, organisational documents, observations, archival records, and other forms of data to develop a comprehensive understanding of the case. This triangulation strengthens the credibility of findings while offering a level of contextual richness that few other methods can provide.
Because qualitative research prioritises interpretation rather than measurement, it is evaluated differently from quantitative research. Concepts such as validity and reliability remain important but are reframed through criteria better suited to interpretive inquiry. Instead of asking whether findings are statistically reliable, qualitative researchers consider whether their interpretations are credible, transferable, dependable, and confirmable (Guba, 1981; Lincoln & Guba, 1985). These criteria acknowledge that multiple realities may coexist and that the researcher's role is not to eliminate subjectivity but to engage with it transparently and reflexively.
This distinction highlights an important principle that is often overlooked by novice researchers. Qualitative research is not simply "quantitative research without statistics." It represents a fundamentally different way of understanding knowledge. The objective is not merely to collect words instead of numbers, but to examine experiences, meanings, and social processes that numerical measures alone cannot adequately explain.
Mixed Methods: Integrating Breadth with Depth
For some research questions, neither quantitative nor qualitative methods are sufficient on their own. A survey may identify a statistically significant trend but offer little explanation for why it exists. Conversely, interviews may reveal rich personal experiences but provide limited evidence regarding the prevalence of those experiences within a larger population. Mixed-methods research addresses this challenge by intentionally integrating both approaches within a single study or programme of inquiry (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017; Morgan, 2014).
The rationale for mixed methods is straightforward: different forms of evidence can complement one another. Quantitative data may reveal patterns, while qualitative data explain the processes or experiences underlying those patterns. Used together, they often provide a more comprehensive understanding than either approach could achieve independently.
Unlike the long-standing philosophical debates that once portrayed quantitative and qualitative paradigms as incompatible, mixed methods adopts a largely pragmatic perspective. The central concern is not methodological allegiance but methodological usefulness. The research question takes precedence, and researchers select whichever combination of methods is most capable of answering it comprehensively (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2010).
Several established mixed-methods designs are commonly employed. In a convergent parallel design, quantitative and qualitative data are collected during the same phase of the study and integrated during interpretation. This approach enables researchers to compare findings from different sources and determine whether they converge, complement one another, or reveal important inconsistencies (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017).
An explanatory sequential design follows a different logic. Researchers first collect and analyse quantitative data before undertaking qualitative research to explain or elaborate on the initial findings. For example, a survey may reveal unexpectedly low employee engagement within a particular department. Follow-up interviews can then explore the organisational dynamics that contributed to those results, transforming statistical observations into meaningful explanations.
The value of mixed methods lies precisely in this integration. Rather than treating quantitative and qualitative findings as separate strands of evidence, mixed-methods research seeks to produce a more holistic understanding by combining the breadth of statistical analysis with the depth of qualitative inquiry (Bryman, 2012).
However, integration should not be mistaken for simply conducting a survey alongside a few interviews. Genuine mixed-methods research requires careful planning to ensure that the different methods inform one another and collectively address the research objectives. Without meaningful integration, a study risks becoming two parallel projects rather than a coherent mixed-methods investigation.
Conclusion
In summary, a research method is far more than a mere technique; it is the operational engine of scholarly inquiry, translating theoretical curiosity into empirical evidence. Whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed, each method embodies a specific set of assumptions, strengths, and limitations that must be carefully weighed in light of the research problem and the philosophical stance of the investigator. Clarity about what methods are, how they differ, and how they connect to broader methodological and paradigmatic frameworks is a hallmark of rigorous, reflexive research that contributes meaningfully to knowledge.

For example, a researcher investigating employee engagement across a multinational organisation may administer a structured survey using Likert-scale items to hundreds or even thousands of participants. Statistical analysis can then reveal patterns that would be difficult, if not impossible, to identify through individual interviews alone (Fowler, 2014). The strength of quantitative methods lies in their ability to produce findings that are systematic, replicable, and, when sampling procedures are appropriate, generalisable to a broader population.
